About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Backend Developer to join our team building the Finerty Open Finance (FOF) Platform - a multi-tenant SaaS solution enabling financial advisors and financial institutions to access and securely exchange financial data, with consumer consent.

This role offers the opportunity to design and build core backend architecture for our platform that directly impacts how thousands of professionals and their clients interact with financial data. You’ll work on secure cloud data architecture, cloud security, cloud migration, API architecture, and emerging technologies including AI and Open Finance - operating in a fast-paced environment where technical decisions drive business outcomes and regulatory compliance.

Ideal for: Backend engineers who thrive designing scalable systems in Financial Services, ensuring performance, security and regulatory compliance; and who enjoy translating complex financial workflows into clean, maintainable code.

We are customer obsessed, always going the extra mile to ensure our users love using our platform. We’re a globally impactful company fuelled by ambition and drive for innovation - Our team moves fast, pursues success relentlessly, challenges the status quo in financial services, and never rests on yesterday’s achievements.

We operate with transparency, embrace first-principles thinking, and prioritise sustainable, scalable systems. We’re an early-stage startup with strong market validation, clear opportunity, and a team that values both technical excellence and user empathy.

Key Responsibilities

Core Platform Development

  • Design, develop, and maintain production APIs that serve both internal and third-party consumers
  • Build and operate multi-tenant services with robust tenant isolation, security controls, and observability
  • Implement API gateway and BFF patterns to optimise frontend integration and performance
  • Work with relational and document-oriented data stores; design schemas for consistency, auditability, and performance
  • Integrate with identity and authentication systems; implement OAuth2/OIDC flows and token-based security
  • Build event-driven workflows for asynchronous processing, audit logging, and cross-service communication
  • Write comprehensive tests (target: 80%+ coverage); participate in code reviews and architectural discussions
  • Contribute to API documentation and technical decision records; support operational runbooks and incident response

Cloud Architecture & Infrastructure

  • Lead or contribute to the cloud infrastructure strategy; migrate services from on-premise to managed cloud services
  • Design cloud-native architectures leveraging platform services (managed databases, key vaults, messaging, storage, API gateways)
  • Implement infrastructure-as-code practices; parameterise configurations for reproducibility and disaster recovery
  • Design for high availability, failover, and geo-redundancy; establish SLO targets and monitoring
  • Optimise cloud spend; ensure efficient resource utilisation and right-sizing

Open Finance & Banking Integration

  • Integrate with Open Banking APIs (PSD2-compliant AIS/PIS); implement consent management and data minimisation principles
  • Prepare backend architecture for Open Finance expansion (pensions, investments, insurance data)
  • Build secure, auditable data flows for third-party financial data consumption
  • Collaborate with fintech aggregators and standards bodies; stay current with evolving regulatory frameworks
  • Design systems that support compliance requirements (audit trails, consent tracking, data retention policies)

AI & Emerging Technologies

  • Evaluate and integrate AI/LLM capabilities for specific business problems (document analysis, data extraction, intelligent validation)
  • Implement safeguards for responsible AI (monitoring, guardrails, explainability where required)
  • Build data pipelines and feature engineering for predictive models when applicable

Security & Compliance

  • Implement security best practices (OWASP, secure coding, threat modeling); participate in security reviews
  • Support ISO 27001 compliance initiatives; maintain control effectiveness
  • Design systems with auditability as a first-class concern; ensure transaction and access logs meet regulatory expectations
  • Evaluate third-party integrations for security posture and compliance alignment
  • Stay current with regulatory changes (PSD2, DORA, GDPR, FCA rules)

Required Experience

Must Have

  • 5+ years backend development in financial services with a strongly-typed language (Java, Kotlin, C#, Go, or similar)
  • Hands-on experience building production RESTful APIs and microservices
  • Production experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred; AWS/GCP with willingness to upskill on Azure)
  • Working knowledge of relational databases; experience optimising queries and designing schemas
  • Solid grasp of containerisation and container orchestration concepts
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation
  • Experience implementing authentication flows (OAuth2, JWT, or similar token-based approaches)
  • Comfortable with distributed systems concepts; understanding of trade-offs (CAP theorem, eventual consistency, etc.)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to decompose complex problems
  • Comfortable working in dynamic environments where priorities evolve

Preferred

  • Production experience with cloud Kubernetes or container orchestration services (AKS, EKS, or similar)
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code
  • Knowledge of event-driven architecture patterns and asynchronous messaging systems
  • Experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases; understanding of when to use each
  • Familiarity with multi-tenant SaaS systems and tenant isolation patterns
  • Exposure to financial services, payments, or insurance domains
  • Experience implementing security controls; familiarity with compliance frameworks (SOC 2, ISO 27001, PCI DSS concepts)
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements in fintech (e.g., PSD2, GDPR, KYC/AML)
  • Knowledge of Open Banking standards and ecosystems
  • Experience in fintech compliance implementation (audit logging, consent management, data retention policies)

Bonus Points

  • Experience building integrations with third-party financial APIs (payments, account data, identity verification)
  • Familiarity with domain-driven design principles; experience modeling complex financial or business domains
  • Experience with API design standards (OpenAPI)
  • Hands-on work with observability tooling (distributed tracing, metrics collection, log aggregation)
  • Exposure to AI/LLM integration in production systems

Working Style & Environment

Remote working: We operate as a distributed team. You’ll work independently with some flexibility to agree working hours to coordinate asynchronously.

Collaboration: You’ll work closely with Frontend Engineers (on API contracts), Product Managers (on requirements and trade-offs), DevOps/Platform Engineers (on infrastructure), and occasionally Compliance/Legal (on regulatory questions).

Ownership: You’ll take end-to-end responsibility for features - from design through production support. We believe in empowering engineers rather than handholding.

Pace & Agility: Priorities evolve based on regulatory changes, market opportunities, and customer feedback. You’ll be comfortable pivoting and learning quickly.

Quality: We prioritise sustainable systems over heroics. If something feels unsustainable, we fix it. Technical debt is managed explicitly.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary reflecting experience
  • Remote working with some flexibility to agree working hours
  • Impact: Direct influence on product direction and UX strategy; your work shapes the platform
  • Collaborative culture: No politics, direct feedback, merit-based decisions
